CSPs are continuing to invest in their access networks, supporting higher-bandwidth and adopting SD-Access.

  • The broadband access equipment market will continue to be strong in 2020 but the strengths are not even throughout the various segments. The diverse nature of access networks is becoming more apparent with differing strategies regarding network expansion and upgrades, reuse of the PON network, adoption of SD-Access, and DAA implementation.
  • Numerous CSPs are focusing on 10G PON deployments, often with the use of Combo PON optics. While DSL upgrades, such as 35b continue, DSL equipment expenditures will continue to decline with fiber-all-the-way of strategic importance for many CSPs
  • The CMTS/CCAP cable equipment market may remain in the doldrums with DOCSIS 3.1 upgrades completed, the lack of a cohesive DOCSIS 4.0 ecosystem, the need for DAA investment, and divergence on adoption of GAP.

Features and Benefits

  • This Trends To Watch Report analyzes the major access network upgrade trends, covering fiber, copper, and coax, along with FWA.
  • This report looks at the adoption of SD-Access and whether it will continue in 2020.

Key questions answered

  • Will NG-PON be adopted? What are the drivers?
  • Will the cable equipment market continue to be in the doldrums? Why?
  • What is happening with adoption of SD-Access?
