Introduction

In this report, Ovum outlines the major trends to watch for consumer fixed broadband providers in 2019. Fixed broadband providers will need gigabit speeds and superior QoE to address convergence and substitution in 2019.

Highlights

  • With DOCSIS 3.1, cable companies are launching 1Gbps services for the first time, matching their FTTP peers and becoming more competitive. Gfast-enabled 1Gbps services have also begun among telcos. In 2019, we expect more gigabit (including 10Gbps) launches.
  • Traditional fixed-only bundles like triple play and dual play are declining in many countries. The decline will continue in 2019. The higher popularity of quad-play and converged bundles is one reason, and the rise of the mobile-only consumer is another.
  • The in-home broadband experience is poor today, resulting in customer churn and a higher opex/capex burden. Gradually, CSPs in developed countries are introducing more advanced Wi-Fi CPE and AI data analytics capabilities. Such investments will accelerate in 2019.
